    Another little thing.........
    A MILITARY MAN'S PERSPECTIVE
Open Letter from a USMC Harrier Pilot
    Wednesday Oct 3, 2001

    Dear American's,

When I opened my e-mail this morning I had about twenty forwards of the
article written by Gordon Sinclair, the Canadian who so eloquently praised
    the United States.

What most of you do not realize is that this commentary was written many
years ago. Those of us in the Military Service have known about it for a
    long time.

Now, Americans are flooding the net with it as if it were new.

    It is not.

When it was written most Americans didn't read it, because most Americans did not care. The tragedy that befell all of us on September 11th shocked America.

America no longer feels safe. Many of you have said, "The government should have known! 30 Billion Dollars is spent on intelligence! What about the Military?" Just a reminder America, you voted our government into office.

For years you allowed some dishonest politicians and twisted television
media personalities to shape your ideas about the defense of your nation.
Why? Because most Americans were too lazy to look beyond the three minute sound-bites on the evening news. Here's a news flash not being broadcast much, "On September 11th, America had the exact level of protection, both militarily and intelligence, that it was willing to pay for".

Only yesterday, the Congress and the Senate approved 40 BILLION dollars as a "Down Payment" to fight this War. A short time ago, our politicians said a 100 Million dollar increase for the Navy budget was substantial. In that same bill they ordered the Navy to conduct an 85 Million Dollar Study on ...guess what America!? Missile Defense? No. Desperately needed parts for our fighter aircraft? Wrong again. Training for Navy Seals? Nope. They wanted Breast Cancer research. Yes, America, your elected officials decided that the US Navy needed more mammograms and less missiles.

Was this an under the table sneaky move? No, it was right out in the open.
The Secretary of Defense and the Secretary of the Navy both opposed it. A New York Senatorial Candidate (Yes, she's the one) was enraged that the Military would be so sexist and irresponsible to the needs of civilians and wanted the Navy to give the money back immediately! But the media paid it little mind. So, America paid little attention.

Did any one ever watch CSPAN? Particularly when the Heads of our Armed
Services essentially begged representatives to give the Military more money to fight terrorism and maintain a strong defense? Did you see the debates by the Heads of the Intelligence Services that terrorism was the new threat?
They told the committees of Congress that the CIA, the FBI, and the Service did not have the money to build the necessary intelligence networks in the areas where terrorists were being harbored.

They warned again and again that there was clear and present danger within America's borders. America must have been watching one of the other 114 satellite channels. The Military said: "We need more money to maintain military readiness and Combat Training."

America Answered : "What the Military needs is Sensitivity Training! You're all sexist homophobes! I saw it on 60 Minutes!" The Military said: "We need money to build ships, planes, tanks, and improve our technology. America still has credible threats throughout the world. Terrorism will come to America's doorstep."

America Answered: "You're all part of a vast right-wing conspiracy. There is no more Soviet Threat! My Senator told me so! He/She says we do not need such a big military! You're dinosaurs trying to hold onto the Cold War! We need Social Programs!"

The Military said: "We need to recruit more Americans into the military. We need to increase our force."

America Answered: "You're not taking my kids! We're going to shut down the ROTC programs at our high schools and universities, because you discriminate against alternative lifestyles! ROTC teaches CHILDREN (under 21) how to shoot guns! You just want another Columbine! Rosie and Oprah say so!"

The Military said: "We can't keep interfering in the civil wars of small
insignificant countries. It wastes our time, expends our resources,
decreases training, and demoralizes our troops. The men and women of the
United States are Warriors trying to defend OUR nation, we are not the third world's police force."

America Answered: "You heartless bastards! Can't you see the tear in the eye of that starving child!! There are flies on her face for Christ's Sake!? Get Moving! Jesse Jackson on CNN said that is what we pay you for!"

The Military Asked: "Why isn't America enraged over the terrorist attack on the USS COLE that killed seventeen AMERICAN Sailors? How about the Air Force barracks bombed in Saudi Arabia? The embassy staffs in Africa? The Soldiers mutilated and dragged through the streets in Somalia?"

America Answered: "We don't have time right now! We're busy defending Animal Rights! The federal government is discriminating against cross-dressing Bolivian hermaphrodites! The police are all members of the Ku Klux Klan! The lack of Ozone is ruining my tan! If they cut deeper into Food Stamps those poor women will have to move down to Size 18/20 Chanel dresses! Corporations are raising the prices of there products sooo high I might not be able to afford the multi-disc DVD Player for my 36" digital ready TV! Besides, YOU GUYS ARE PAID TO DIE!"

So, America, while you sit on your couch or around your office coffee pots and ask, "Why did those terrorists kill innocent civilians? Why didn't they go after the Military?"

Remember this America: They already did, but America didn't care. These
Terrorists realized that they needed to kill American Civilians, and lots of
them, before they could have their desired reaction from the people of this country. Well, now they have it.

Yes I know this is my third one but I just had to say my part.......
    Average Military Man

The average age of the military man is 19 years. He is a short haired,
tight-muscled kid who, under normal circumstances is considered by
society as half man, half boy. Not yet dry behind the ears, not old
enough to buy a beer, but old enough to die for his country.

He never really cared much for work and he would rather wax his own car
than wash his father's; but he has never collected unemployment either.

He's a recent High School graduate; he was probably an average student,
pursued some form of sport activities, drives a ten year old jalopy, and
has a steady girlfriend that either broke up with him when he left, or
swears to be waiting when he returns from half a world away.

He listens to rock and roll or hip-hop or rap or jazz or swing and 155mm
    Howitzers.

He is 10 or 15 pounds lighter now than when he was at home because he is
working or fighting from before dawn to well after dusk.

He has trouble spelling, thus letter writing is a pain for him, but he
can field strip a rifle in 30 seconds and reassemble it in less time in
    the dark.

He can recite to you the nomenclature of a machine gun or grenade
launcher and use either one effectively if he must.

He digs foxholes and latrines and can apply first aid like a
    professional.

He can march until he is told to stop or stop until he is told to march.

He obeys orders instantly and without hesitation, but he is not without
    spirit or individual dignity.

He is self-sufficient. He has two sets of fatigues: he washes one and
wears the other. He keeps his canteens full and his feet dry.

He sometimes forgets to brush his teeth, but never to clean his rifle.

He can cook his own meals, mend his own clothes, and fix his own hurts.

If you're thirsty, he'll share his water with you; if you are hungry,
    his food.

He'll even split his ammunition with you in the midst of battle when you
    run low.

He has learned to use his hands like weapons and weapons like they were
his hands. He can save your life - or take it, because that is his job.
He will often do twice the work of a civilian, draw half the pay and
still find ironic humor in it all. He has seen more suffering and death
than he should have in his short lifetime. He has stood atop mountains
of dead bodies, and helped to create them.

He has wept in public and in private, for friends who have fallen in
    combat and is unashamed.

He feels every note of the National Anthem vibrate through his body
while at rigid attention, while tempering the burning desire to
'square-away' those around him who haven't bothered to stand, remove
their hat, or even stop talking. In an odd twist, day in and day out,
far from home, he defends their right to be disrespectful.

Just as did his Father, Grandfather, and Great-grandfather, he is paying
the price for our freedom. Beardless or not, he is not a boy. He is the
American Fighting Man that has kept this country free for over 200
    years.

He has asked nothing in return, except our friendship and understanding.

Remember him always, for he has earned our respect and admiration with
    his blood.

Cowboy has spoken very loudly...but unfortunately
it will never be loud enough...

our government will support those who are too
lazy to get out of bed and go to work...but
they cannot pay those who have given us our
freedom what they deserve! knowing people who
have suffered protecting us..whether we felt
it was right or wrong...no amount of money will
ever give them their peace...the suffering they
    go through..watching their buddies die...or
    seeing them tortured...

i dont want to get off Cheles subject..but
we need to change our ways of thinking...we
need to do something before it is too late...
or is it already? have we let the people in
charge screw us all already to the point that
things will never be fixed? sleeping Americans
says it all...bury heads in the sand..not
wanting to see what is really happening out there
until it is too late...9/11 was a wake up call
for me in so many ways...i had to many personal
dealings to pay attention to the news..but after
that...i watch and try to learn what is going on
even if i dont always understand...because i have
two lil men that are close to that age..15 and 12
is way too close to 18 to be burying my head in
the sand anymore! i want to know what is going
on and where my boys may be headed in the future!

    Talking

i don't understand the "they cannot pay those" and then the "no amount of money will ever" so if "we" DID pay those...would it ever be enough? Don't get me wrong...i come from a military family but what is it that would make you happy?

    i just wanna say this...VOTE!!!

You either put the man there now and want to beef or you didn't and want to beef...and that's fine as long as you voted your mind. if, gosh forbid, you didn't/dont vote...well...take your opinions to the street and practice free speech but know that free speech , just like freedom is never free.

I do not support the so called war- i do support our troops and those of other countries sent there because they took a pledge.

Maybe war is needed to get peace...maybe not.

    Vote for something...anything...but vote.

Then you will, indeed, have a right and reason to speak out.

enters into this...though i've avoided it for a while...

well, i read an article the other day about a 19 year old soldier from glasgow, scotland....who, failing to find work, had joined the british army and was shipped out only to die shortly after arriving in iraq...on that personal level it's so sad

i don't, i never have, and i never will support this 'war' but i do agree that service personnel are bonded into an agreement to go where they are sent...i can understand the defence of borders and the reciprocation for attacks on a country by outside forces...but i cannot understand the invasion of a country which had not made any definitive strike against another....in the terms of human and financial loss, this is nothing less than one of the greatest tragedies of our time

save a few somewhat warped individuals, i'm sure the majority of these men and women uphold their responsibilities in a rational, principled way and deserve our respect for doing the job which they signed up to do

a little off this thread but there was mention made elsewhere....i think it's important to know that the majority of the prisoners tortured by service personnel were common criminals not terrorists...no excuses for either side but let's not pretend they were trying to extract terrorist information from a carjacker...the sad thing is that a few twisted individuals can destroy anything good that happens

adds my soapbox to the collection in the corner

signs out hoping all this comes to an end soon...and people get to come home...and others have their home returned to them....but i'm sad to say i'm not hopeful

I did/do Vote and I am Ex-Military, I was over there during the actual war and I have personally seen the cosequences of it. My opinions are just that opinions, however there has been war since almost the beginning of time and I can see no end to it in the near future.

<font size="4" face="Tempus Sans ITC, Verdana, Arial">i COMPLETELY disagree with this.

while i agree that voting is 'speaking'... non
votes is also a statement. the action of voting
does not issue anyone a voice unless, similarily,
non voting is also a voice.

there are countries right now that make voting
an obligatory force in being a citizen of that
country... and imo... anything obligatory doesn't
    constitute a fair standard.

change in a system can (and will) be determined
by voting.. true... but change in a system can
also be influenced by non-participation. this
is clearly evidenced in consumerism... (surely
i do not have to show that the lack of purchasing
a product means the product quickly becomes
    obsolete)

my point is... you do not have to settle for
the options you are given... especially in a
*supposed* democratic system. this post isn't
a shot at dave... especially when i understand
that dave is very passionate on similar fronts
    that i am passionate about.

this post is merely to show that while i agree
that voting is important... so too is the right
not to settle for what you are given.

the government is aware of the slippery-slope
of the recent non-voting population... and instead
of changing the system... more and more schemes
are being concocted to get people to vote...

eventually something is going to give...

while i am NOT stating that the voting process
is gay or skewed... i am only speaking from the
position that i will not vote because its an
understood obligatory 'right' because i'm an
    american citizen.

i simply cannot imagine what it would be like
if my voting was forced. a terrible society
would then rule.... and we cannot have that.
